THIS JUST IN: Today, a train in France set a new record for the fastest train on a regular track, once again proving the age-old maxim “The French do things too!”. After receiving a boost in electrical power, a standard-issue TVG train traipsed across the countryside at nearly 515km/h. A little perspective for all you Americans unfamiliar with the metric system: The moon travels at just 514km/h. It’s a pretty cool accomplishment, but keep in mind this is just the record for conventional trains. The Japanese set the overall train speed record way back in 2003 with their futuristic maglev train–powered not by electricity or gas, but pure honor.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Today, France has proved itself as the world leader in obsolete, 19th-century technology. Next up: French engineers are working on the worlds longest telegram and a 3D stereoscope so realistic, it will seem as if you are magically transported to the fabled Pyramids of Egypt. They’ve also sworn to fulfill “the most beautiful dream that has haunted the hearts of man since Icarus” by developing a miraculous flying “aeroplane” device sometime within the next 20 years. We’ll see.

The Future?
