Personally, I find space exploration way cooler than undersea exploration. A lot of people think the same way, especially NASA. NASA funds some sea exploration, but it’s primarily to prepare for outerspace stuff. For instance, NASA sent a crew of astronauts to the Aquarius undersea lab in 2005, but only to get ready for their upcoming stint in the International Space Station.
There’s obviously some resentment among undersea station crews aimed at the ISS guys, who show up for a few days, mess up their station and then fly to space and get all the glory. It’s nice, then, that NASA has the ISS call the Aquarius crew every once in a while to help smooth over relations. I just read on Space.com that Astronaut Sunita Williams Called the Aquarius Undersea Laboratory last Thursday from the International Space Station.
